The University of North Texas is a comprehensive, state-supported institution of higher education that was recommended in 1986 for designation as an emerging national research university by the Governor's Select Committee on Higher Education. The recent name change in 1988 from North Texas State University to the University of North Texas was approved by the state legislature in recognition of the university's expanding role and scope. With an enrollment of almost 30,000 the University of North Texas is the forth largest university in the state. The university offers 128 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

The University of North Texas is located in Denton, a friendly college town with a population of over 82,000. The campus is composed of 133 buildings on 424 acres, tops a triangle linking Dallas and Fort Worth, and is only a 45-minute drive to each of these cities. Many business, industry, education, government and cultural activities that support university studies are based in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
